https://w3.rpgresearch.com/research/archives/public/public-news/therapeutic-role-playing-games-rpg-therapy-for-older-adults-cohort-considerations
In the past 10 years I have been receiving increasingly frequent inquiries about using RPGs in therapeutic settings for older adults. Here is a summary of information to help you get started with this population...
Greetings! Thank you for making contact. While there is a dearth of research specific to using RPGs to achieve therapeutic goals for older adults, there is a large amount of research in the Therapeutic Recreation profession on using games in geriatric settings, and the long list of benefits from such activities. Components from those studies are part of what lead me down the path as a Recreation Therapist to look into RPGs for a wide range of populations.
There is also a fair amount of research on the use of RPGs for psychiatric populations, both in-patient and out-patient, for youth and adults, that could potentially be extrapolated to older populations.
If you haven't already, try our research focus page here:
www2.rpgresearch.com/research
If you don't see anything listed in those links, use the search engine in the upper right hand corner, it is a robust full-text search engine for the site's thousands of articles.
Specific to RPGs and the older adults population, as far as I know I have the most experience with this population with RPGs, but it will be mostly anecdotal and observational information I can share with you at this point.
This is very much a cohort consideration.
It is important for service providers to develop knowledge and skils in the area of RPGs, because role-playing games were invented in 1974, and that population is now aging in their 60s+. Their favorite recreational past time may very well be RPGs, and care providers should be amenable and supportive an healthy approches to including this activity, and the many potential benefits that the research supports could be received from participation in RPGs. Also an important awaress of caveats, especially for some mental health populations, and the important controls that should be added to mitigate the risks and maximize the benefits.
I have observed role-playing games as old as into their 80s, but very few (they came into RPGs late in life). The cutoff, as of 2018, has been mostly people in the 60s, or at most 70s.
From about 70s+ most of the population just doesn't "get it", isn't interested in it, or has to strongly inculcated negative stereotypes to be open to taking on the activity for themselves. Really, the inculcation is seems to be strongest for about 40 to 80 year olds, with very little to none above 80 (a pretty suddent drop off if it were on a graph (just little awareness in general, or if any awareness, negative inculcated, mostly religion groups related information from the anti-RPG movements), and different inculcated attitudes for those in their teens and early 20s, with 30-something being a more gradual slope.
More specific responses below within context...

Wonderful! Please keep us in the loop on this. You might want to more formally join our volunteer team and join our Monday or Tuesday meetings sharing knowledge, research, and program observations between many other volunteers. You can join as a volunteer, (you can remote in to the meetings via Skype), by filling out:

Perform university and web searches, in addition to your key words, using "Therapeutic Recreation" and "Recreation" therapy, especially "games", "board games", "card games", "tabletop" etc., as other keywords, you should be able to find a fair amount for other games. That may help you find some associative research of interest (n addition to our resources).
> Is there any resource, research > or opinions that you could provide to help?
I have lots of opinions and general observations with this population, and it would fill many pages. It might be faster to have a 30-60 minute Skype or phone conversation for that.
> > > Are you actively doing any research?
We have several research projects currently underway, and do have some in the queue related to this topic. I have performed some less formal research, in that we created program plans, and assessed the outcomes, but they were not formal research studies in that we did not have control groups, etc.
> If so, would it at all be > possible to be involved in any way?
You would be most welcomed to assist us! We have far more work than people, so if you join as a volunteer, and are patient with the learning curve, we could work together to help put together a good comprehensive program for you based on our prior experiences with such programs.
> Also, any input on how you > monitor outcomes of a therapy session and how to focus on specific > topics within a game to best help a specific disorder would be ever > so helpful.
You will see on our site a number of tools that different research projects used. We select from a battery of over 50 assessment tools, depending on the population, setting, and outcome measurements desired.
The Therapeutic Recreation community has a large book just on assessment tools in TR, for a wide range, including the validity and reliability numbers for each assessment tool.
Again, this would be a lengthy conversation via text, spanning pages, so it might be best via skype/phone to cover the vast information the most quickly. > > > Any information or help you provide would be greatly appreciated. > > > Sincerely, > > Trent Pierson >
Here is a summmary list of just a few of the assessment tools and processes we use:

https://w3.rpgresearch.com/research/archives/public/public-news/rpg-training-programs
The RPG Therapeutics LLC website has updated the section of the site listing training options for "Introduction to RPG Training Series", "Role-Playing Game Advocate", "RPG Facilitator", "Game Master in Education", and "Game Master in Therapy" and "Introduction" series of training and certification programs.
Due to various individuals and organization asking for more formal training program information in efforts to integrate RPG-based programs, the RPG Therapeutics LLC website has a section on the site related to Role-Playing Game Training from various approaches.
For those of us that naturally fell into and enjoy RPGs, the concept of paying for RPG training may seem at the very least unnecessary. However in this age of increasingly finite availability of "free" hours, and for those interested in trying to apply RPG in an educational or therapeutic setting, optimizing the time it takes to ramp up the skills the rest of us developed over decades, may be considered a valuable Return on Investment (ROI).
Being mentored and trained directly is often faster for achieving specific goals than self-training. Of course I'm a strong advocate for both approaches (self and mentored training), but it is unclear if there is actually much of a market for such formalized training. It will be interesting to see if these programs catch on.
The programs closely model typical training and certification programs one would see in various technical and healthcare industries. Some of the programs are only for "established professionals" in either education or therapy, while others are open to all.
Some of these training programs were originally developed around 1985, and have continued to be revised and improved since. The website recently provided a significant update to the list of training programs available.
The training programs listed include:
RPG Introduction Training Series
Overview Presentation - A very densely packed semi-interactive presentation on the history and effects of all 4 RPG formats (2 hours).
SRPG-1 - Introduction to Solo RPG (2 hours) (open to all).
CRPG-1 - Introduction to Computer-based RPG (3 hours) (open to all).

RPGF - Role-Playing Game Facilitator Training Series
RPGF-0 - Introduction to RPG for Professionals (4 hours) (professionals only).
GMT-T - Master/Trainer (pending) (500+ hours related experience) (professionals only).
[+mod-x] Specific Population Training add-on “modules” Training Series
These supplementary modules drill down into specific programs for specific client populations and their related goals.
Participants are generally required to already be established professionals with certification, degree, or licensing in a relevant healthcare or educational field.
Additionally, each module has prerequisite training and certification from one or more of the above programs.
+mod-asd-1 - TRPG for ASD / PDD / ADHD spectrum youth and adult clients (professionals only).

https://w3.rpgresearch.com/research/archives/public/public-news/confirmed-writing-entire-chapter-on-rpg-for-4th-edition-textbook-facilitation-techniques-in-therapeutic-recreation
Wonderful news, I just received an email today confirming they wish for me to proceed with writing the entire chapter on using role-playing games as a facilitation technique for therapeutic recreation!
Exciting news! Just received an email that I am confirmed for writing a full chapter, on Role-Playing Games, in the upcoming 4th edition textbook "Facilitation Techniques in Therapeutic Recreation" by Professors Dattilo and McKenney of Penn State!
I hope to have the final drafts completed over this summer. There are only 2 textbooks on the topic of facilitation techniques in TR available (the other is from Stumbo), and all Recreational Therapists must cover this topic as part of their training and working toward NCTRC certification as CTRS.
As far as I have been able to find researching since 2004, there is zero literature in the TR profession, beyond what I have created and disseminated, about any role-playing game format. This will cover all forms of role-playing games: tabletop, live-action, computer-based, and solo adventure books & modules. It will focus the most on the tabletop and LARP modes, but include considerations for using the other 2 modes.
I already wrote a rough draft of this when Dattilo suggested he was interested after seeing my presentation on RPG & Recreation Therapy at the Pacific Northwest Therapeutic Recreation Association a year and half ago (PNWTRA).

https://w3.rpgresearch.com/research/archives/public/public-news/tabletop-rpg-recreation-therapy-example-scenario-visual-impairment
This is an excerpt from the RPG Handbook of Practice book I have been working on. This section is for clients with significant to complete visual impairment due to traumatic brain injury to the occipital lobe. It can be extrapolated for the whole range of visual impairments. The client wants to participate in a non-therapy-setting leisure activity of tabletop role-playing gaming. The Recreation Therapist will need to evaluate and write up the potential challenges and modifications that may be necessary for the client to participate in this activity with as little difficulty as possible....

This is an excerpt from Hawkes-Robinson's "RPG Handbook of Practice" useful to both professionals and layperson. It is an unofficlal extension of the bookRecreation Therapy Handbook of Practice, delve into one of the five areas from Activities and Participation with some detail, providing a example client and activity combinations. Provides the World Health Organization (WHO) International Classification of Disability (ICD) and International Classification of Function (ICF) code for the Activities & Participation section, with A&P performance qualifiers as well.
As usual, whenever possible, will attempt to help a facilitator work out the challenges related to RPG's, whether tabletop, live-action, or computer based, usually focusing initially on tabletop.
Example includes a visually impaired (up to totally blind) client's participation in the leisure activity of tabletop role-playing gaming with other people around a table at a non-care-provider's home.
Assessment
For this example scenario, the client has total visual impairment (b210.4) “total blindness” due to TBI of the occipital lobe (s11993).
Within a structured facility or at home, the client is able to perform very well overall without assistance from other people through the use of various adaptations, modifications, training, tools, and technologies (Performance: 1), but is severely challenged without these aides (Performance: 3). Of course tasks such as driving (d475.4) are not possible.
Other than transportation to areas outside of public transit (d4702.1414), client does notgenerally need assistance from other people, but does have complete dependence on the assistance from visual-impairment aiding devices (braille, text-to-voice devices, walking cane, etc.).
Without these devices or aide from people, client may be significantly limited in participation level for many activities, including the proposed tabletop RPG (2nd qualifier: 3 – Severe).
With the assistance of devices, client is almost able to perform all functions normally, just mild difficulty (3rd qualifier: 1). This is mostly due to client still adjusting to state of visual impairment and still developing the skills necessary, but getting closer to 0 difficulty.
Without people to assist, the client has little trouble if able to use assisting devices (4th qualifier:1), but if unable to use assisting devices, then client will have severe difficulty accomplishing the task (4th qualifier: 3).
Implementing overall ratings as per recommendation to use the higher (more difficulty performing the task) rating over the lower or average.
So, overall coding and rating: b210.4 Total blindness due to (s11993) occipital lobe structural damage. Performance in tabletop RPG activity rating: d9200.1313 Participation in a tabletop role-playing gaming group as a player for recreation rather than specific therapy: D920 Recreation & Leisure - d9200 Play - “Engaging in games with rules.... such as playing chess or cards...” While RPG could also be placed under Community Life because there are many formalized RPG clubs, meetings, and conventions, the most common, and more casual form is a group of players that regularly meet, typically once per week for several hours at a participants home for a tabletop role-playing game session. This is structured play.
Accommodations/Modifications
It is strongly recommended to use more "theater of the mind" approaches to the game play, rather than miniatures or other visually-based approaches.
Also keep in mind the player's history, and considerations for those who might have challenges similar toAphantasia, the inability to visually imagine a scene. Use lots of adjectives for rich detailed verbal descriptiosn, and use more than just visual sense, include all of the other senses when feasible: sound, touch (temperature, humidity, smooth vs coarse, etc.), smell, taste, "sixth sense" (a gut feeling of being watched, a place that makes you feel calm, etc.).
If the client has complete visual impairment (impairment severity level 4):
If possible, the Game Master / Facilitator should have access to a Braille Printer. These tend to be _very_ expensive, but if have access, can print braille character sheets. Another option is electronic character sheets with screen readers on a tablet, though the technology at the time of this writing is lacking.
Braille dice. These can be difficult to find beyond standard d6. UPDATE 20180318: There are now some polyhedral dice assortments in braille available through the DOTS RPG Project. As of this update, you can get a set of 8 polyhedral dice for about $50. This includes 1 each of d4 d6 d8 d12 d20 and 2 d10. You can purchase the braille polyhedra dice throughshapeways. Or through etsy.com for about $15here.
If you have access to the braille dice, you can use these to keep track of frequently changing character statistics, such as if the character normally has 8 hit points, use the 8 sided die, and like a collectible card game, have the player change the number on the die as hit points are lost or gained.
If you do not have the resources available for either braille or electronic devices, then although it is less ideal, the GM and/or fellow players can assist the player with the visual impairment, verbally as best as possible, so at least they are not excluded from the activity. The client will need either electronic version on a device that supports text to voice or braille versions of the rulebook(s) for the game system, some means of keeping track of the character's statistical information, and any notes the player/client may want to keep as the adventure progresses (maybe a digital voice recorder with a headphone so the client/player can play back verbal notes to self as needed, without disturbing the rest of the group to do so).
Use of braille or electronic dice that have an auditory ability to indicate the result of a roll. Alternatively many apps on smart phones and PC's are available that can electronically represent random dice results, then the app just needs to have a text-to-voice component for the visually impaired participant. May be able to use a dice reading app for actual regular dice, in a dice tower (to be researched).
For those with just slight to moderate impairment, have the room more brightly lit with high-contrast or larger size dice, characters, and books without any artwork behind the text (watermarks), may be sufficient.
Environment should be as free of noise polution as possible since more dependence on auditory input, participants with visual impairment are not able to add visual input to differentiate some phenomes and won't be able to use typical lip-reading to differentiate some sounds (inverse of the McGurk Effect), and noisy environments (convention halls, many game store gaming areas, etc.) could severely limit their ability to follow along with the narrative.
Failing that, the client is dependent on the other players and/or Game Master to verbally indicate the result from the client rolling the dice on the table. The reduced autonomy without the accessible technoogies is not as self-empowering as would be ideal, but helps the player still be able to participate fully and derive the many documented benefits from participation in tabletop RPG, which is far better than exclusion.
Since the rest of RPG play is primarily auditory normally, other modifications are generally not necessary for complete unimpaired particpation in the game.
We have some blind users on our site (http://www.rpgcrossing.com), where users play tabletop games via "play-by-post" (PBP). This might be an excellent medium for visually impaired users. Additionally, sites like ours often have friendly communities with many members happy to help out people who are learning to play.
We've had reports that our mobile style (a simplified style, though unfortunately currently only available to paid subscribers) is very useable. A recent post: "Blind Mac user here. Just have to say, I am loving using the mobile site on my Mac. I switched my user agent under Safari to iPhone Safari with iOS 5.1, and Voiceover works beautifully. So much easier to read posts. I'd pay continuously for a CS membership for the mobile site alone." Mobile styles might be something to look for in general for this kind of text based gaming.
Further discussion with the user revealed that our character sheets are less friendly (the data titles and fields are reversed in the code, which confuses her reader and which I was able to confirm using a text only browser known as 'lynx'), but hopefully we'll be able to remedy that without breaking the visual formatting.
My main point: play-by-post (PBP) can be an excellent and accessible way to engage in tabletop gaming with an online community.
Note: Due to the nature of the medium, games tend to progress more slowly, people can game on their own schedule (there is no requirement to set aside big blocks of time for gaming), and the community members tend to be a bit older (our median age is ~27).
Added links to two sources for braille polyhedral dice. Corrected some typos and updated language to include laypersons not just professionals.

This was triggered by someone's question in a Facebook group, and I thought it worthwhile to repost here, in a more legible format, and more useful platform...
Question: "Hi! I am working towards my drama therapy certification and very interested in rpg games as a scaffold for people who find improv alone or role playing without a context a step too far. I'd love to chat with anyone who has had success with any games in particular. I'm trying to get a short-term group together for neurotypical adults interested in play and self-growth." -Dana Sayre - https://www.facebook.com/groups/637511693089807/permalink/642234212617555/
I am going to be egregious in over-generalizing here, because this is getting to be too lengthy a response in my attempt to include many of the caveats, variables, and exceptions. While the topics discussed below are applicable to both LARP and TRPG, I will be focusing initially in this response on the TRPG aspect more, since I am more familiar with the TRPG commercial products than LARP commercial products.
I do not have the wonderful Drama Therapy background of Adam Davis of Wheelhouse Workshop, but some clients I worked with that have been through DT previously, found the more free-form drama therapy or even very free-form LARP, more daunting, using words such as "too much", "too vague", and "too personal", for them to be comfortable. Especially for those with variants of social phobias. For those overwhelmed who find "too much choice is overwhelming", many find the added structure of a more formalized TRPG or LARP system "safer" with more clearly defined parameters.
These experiences are highly variable from individual to individual. Also group dynamics can significantly skew these experiences & results. Groups consisting of more trusting individuals seem to find the freedom of more free-form enjoyable, while those with higher anxiety/insecurity levels report feeling more threatened, especially if they do not know/trust the other players, this is age-irrelevant, young children with good attachment often do better than adults with trust issues when in the free-form settings. Of course this doesn't preclude using free-form specifically to address such issues (this is a common approach and theme in Therapeutic Recreation (TR) & Recreational Therapy (RT) programs, we are heavily trained in "ice breaker" activities in an attempt to address exactly these issues.
For my approach using RPGs in more formal therapeutic and educational settings, creating programs to achieve specific client goals, in addition to perusing/consulting any doctor/therapist diagnoses, I typically have prospective participants complete various Leisure Interest surveys (a standard practice in Recreation Therapy) such as variants on the Leisure Interest Measure (LIM), Cooperation & trust Scale, Leisure Attitude Measurement (LAM), and my own Genre Interest Assessment Tool (GIAT), and System Interest Assessment Tool (SIAT), etc. to determine where their interests lie, and attempt to match the players, genre, setting, play style, and system as much as I can to those results, and the best mapping possible to their other diagnostic needs and goals.
After each session, participants complete variations on leisure satisfaction experiences of the activity, and before each session about their intervening time (typically weekly or ever 2 weeks), regarding anything about the previous games that came up for them "in real life" (IRL), to continue the assessment loop, and encourage "processing".
It is assumed for this discussion we are focusing on tabletop RPG (TRPG) for this discussion, not LARP, computer-based, or solo. It is also assumed for this discussion we are focused on Fantasy genre settings. There are many other genres such as science fiction (Star Wars, Star Trek, Babylon 5, Traveller, etc.), Modern Day dystopics, Steampunk, period horrors (Call of Cthulhu, Vampire, etc.), and so many others. A fair number of people that end up enjoying RPG, do not actually care for Fantasy-based settings, so it is an important consideration. A number of people that had tried a fantasy-based RPG decided they didn't like RPG. But when presented with a chance in another genre based more on their leisure & genre assessment results (modern day police-procedural, or 1940's "gumshoe" style, mysteries, for example), reported completely changing their attitude about RPG. Of course there are genre neutral systems such as Steve Jackson's Generic Universal Role-Playing System (GURPS), and Basic Role-Playing (BRP), which can be used easily for any genre and provide many supplementary settings in those many genres. To help narrow down the vast array of options, I find the aforementioned assessments invaluable in providing optimal experiences for the participants.
For commercially available TRPG, Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) I have found useful as the "Lingua Franca" of the tabletop RPG world. It is the easiest for preparing a transition/exit plan from inpatient to outpatient, it is the easiest to purchase hard copies, and to find groups at game stores, etc. However, I am increasingly (after ~5+ years of use) liking what I am seeing with Cubicle 7's The One Ring Role-Playing Game (TOR RPG). It is set in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth, generally the time after The Hobbit, but before The Lord of the Rings begins. It is focused heavily on "Fellowship", and has built-in game mechanics to gently, in a positive way, encourage group cohesion and sharing, without being a "nanny system" like Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play. TOR RPG is helpful because the Middle-earth setting is well known due to the movies (of course the books are much better!) :-) . In the interest of full disclosure, my bias for Tolkien-related material, I have been running Tolkien-based RPGs since the early 80s, and I am founder of the Eä Tolkien Society, the annual Tolkien Moot gaming convention, Other Minds Tolkien Gaming magazine, and more. :-) As for expenses, TOR RPG is on par with D&D 5e for entry costs.
As for Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play (WHFRP), especially if you include the "social mods", can be very useful for more troubled players, such as abused or incarcerated youth. The system provides very clearly defined parameters, and visual aides to help reduce "cheating". Not usually an issue in most RPG groups, but with some at-risk, and especially troubled & incarcerated populations, very helpful. A group in Israel reported very positive results with WHFRP over a couple of years with several groups, with participants that were mostly at-risk youth and some with Autism spectrum diagnoses. Warhammer FRP has one of the highest base costs for entry of any TRPG, and much more than TOR RPG.

The schedule for the Pacific Northwest American Therapeutic Recreation Association conference has been confirmed. I will be presenting at the Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Oregon, on "The use of Role-Playing Games (RPG) as an Intervention Modality" on January 29th, 2016, from 2:20 pm to 3:50 pm.
The Pacific Northwest American Therapeutic Recreation Association conference posted their official presentation schedule today:
This will be taking place at the Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland Oregon, January 29th, 2016.
My session is 90 minutes (including Q&A), beginning 2:20 pm and running until 3:50 pm.
The title of my presentation is: "The Use of Role-Playing Games (RPG) as an Intervention Modality".
I am still waiting to hear back if they will allow me to record the presentation.
The research and discussion includes all forms of role-playing games, including: tabletop, live-action (LARP), computer-based, and solo (including Choose Your Own Adventure).
This presentation is a refined and updated version of my presentation from the April 2015 Washington State American Therapeutic Recreation Association Conference at Seattle Children's Hospital, previously under the lengthier title of "The Use of Role-Playing Games as an Intervention Modality to Achieve Educational and Therapeutic Goals for Individuals and Groups, from the Therapeutic Recreation Perspective."

:@RonTheRBDM The people behind She Kills Monsters was on Dragon Talk! http://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/dd-and-theater-collide-she-kills-monsters
:i did my dissertation on the use of video games as an aid to emotional learning for people with ASD. RPG would also be an excellent cause and effect safe zone teachable area
:Religious intolerance.com has a appologeticly written debunking of all the crazy stuff that people were saying in the 80's and stuff it even shows what kind of crazy stuff these people were saying not relating to RPG's and its very revealing about how crazy those people were in those days.
:I just stumbled across a vid on Youtube this afternoon that implied that Magic Cards are full of evil symbols...surprised to find people that still feel this way...unfortunate
:Yeah that's what I'm saying people that say things like the cards are the devil also say things like watching your laundry in the wash machine will make you a sinner. Its nuts once you look at it.
:TBH if I end up in hell I get to keep DMing and listening to alice cooper.. Not much different to now lol.. I suspect the RPG circle of hell is either having enough DMs but you can never successfully schedule a game, or enough players and no one willing to DM
:TBH if I end up in hell I get to keep DMing and listening to alice cooper.. Not much different to now lol.. I suspect the RPG circle of hell is either having enough DMs but you can never successfully schedule a game, or enough players and no one willing to DM
:I had a very supportive family and friends... we played D&D, Marvel Super Heroes, Top Secret, and Star Frontiers when I was in middle school and high school.
:That hell thing is a whole different discussion, hell in the bible is literally separation from God and not the firey pit some guy wrote a book about back in the day.
:As a player from almost Day 1 of D&D I've seen all the crazy theories about gamers. I weathered it and am happy to see the resurgence of gaming. Still DMing, including streaming, in spite of being a female and *ahem* over the hill.
:This interview is perfectly timed...I just started a course on vampires and wizards as symbols in society...their research is going to be a great resource!
:I grew up in the south and played D&D during the Satanic Panic of the 80's. I remember sermons at church about the evil of D&D and how it was gateway to Satanic worship. Parents however were more understanding.
:im 33, known about DND for 20 odd years, never played. got into Critical Role, got my brother into CR and now we've recently formed a roleplay group in the back room of our local pub. wish I'd got into it at school.
:As an 80s kid my mum only really freaked out about the odd computer game, happily drove me to other adults places where i'd spend the weekend playing D&D.. great times.
:I'm freaking out! Thank you @dnd for having these guys on. There's a charity here in the UK that helps people with all levels of physical disabilities get back into gaming. And I've just shared that with RPG research. I'm so glad you've got these guys!
:@OboeCrazy That's it! My sister is too far away to take my niece to the concerts, but I love what they are doing with their autistic friendly concerts.
:My 10 year old son is autistic, I DM'd a game for him and his younger brother & sister, they loved it and now want a campaign. I'm thinking of using the starter set but thats the campaign we are running at the pub so I cant read the full campaign
:@Slit_518 TL;DR Hawke has been discussing how he uses RPG games to assist all kinds of people, whether they come out of a coma with some brain damage, or are autistic, or have physical limitations, etc. It's really really great, so I would encourage you to go back and catch the whole thing later!
:@Cybearian Pick up storm kings thunder, or out of the abyss.. Either runs well as a campaign and are the better ones.. (Curse of strahd is awesome as well but the other 2 I think would play great for kids)
:@MikeMN2KGod If it ever makes it into a printed book then it's got a good shot.. Or if they ever have a DMsGuild as a +1.. which I don't think will happen for a while.
:Interesting comment! In one of my groups I have a player who gets very upset at descriptions, wants just to battle. Maybe I need to bring in more senses. He might have that problem.
:@Slit_518 That isn't the biggest issue really, the biggest one would be the time for the admins to vet the content there too.. Sure they could treat it like CCC creation but I don't see it really happening
:He is more than that. Got very upset and apparently confused by a description of where doors were, etc. There were only visual clues in my description. I'll try inserting more senses.
:@Ralthan I have a kid friendly/beginner friendly module that I have made, but right now it is in the hands of a company for review, so as it stands, I am not sure if it is to be published or not yet.
:@Slit_518 As for being alone in creating content, if you're creating AL content, join the CCC creators group on facebook maybe? I'm in there for when I get around to start creating content.. as a con organizer always happy to run content as well
:When I was a little child, we still have radio, no TV. You -HAD- to develop imagination, picture things. Today people realyy have lost that ability and I think RPG should be required studies.
:@MtnMama1 Different times too, when I was a kid we had tv, but we got outside, played with figures etc.. Was still a ton of imagination involved.. Agreed it should basically be a course they take if only to teach the life and social skills they learn through it.
:@mewfantasy Try talking to your local library! Libraries tend to be pretty open about setting up after school programs like that...it brings people into the library!
:@SpaceJunkz Im one of the Elite Dangerous community ambassadors and Frontier Developments do a lot of fund raising for SE. Ive met Barry and some of the other folks at the charity.
:@Cybearian Ah! I might have met you at some point! LOVE BARRY! He's an amazing guy! Went to a few events with him that had the ED people there! My name is Georgina! But it was so long ago, if we met it might have been very briefly
:Great job representing the 509 John! Hope to see you on the gaming bus, with both of us living in the greater Spokane area. Or at least @ the Valley mall on Wednesday for gaming @ Uncle's games there. Woot! Woot!
:If you enjoyed this show consider subscribing to the channel to support more content! Or you can gift a subscription and help someone else discover the amazing world of D&D! You get awesome emotes, no ads, and more! dndAmpInformation on using Amazon Prime to subscribe to a Twitch channel: https://twitch.amazon.com/prime

Hi there everyone, definitely check out this Q&A with Wheelhouse Workshop founder Adam Johns & Adam Davis!
Also many thanks kindly to Adam & Adam of Wheelhouse Workshop for the the kind mentions around 9:30 and later!
Be sure to go back to the beginning to catch the full session.
Definitely want to improve that, would welcome input on how to make it easier for folks.
There is actually quite a bit of correlative research on actual RPGs and participants, especially D&D, but not only D&D.
There is a fair amount of research on using specifically RPGs to achieve specific therapeutic and educational goals, the problem is that they are limited in duration, numbers, or scope, but there is definitely existing research from different disciplines on using tabletop, live-action, and computer-based RPGs: http://rpgresearch.com/documents/-list
There is too little controlled causal research, though quite a few case histories and small studies that may be causal. However, they need to be larger, more longitudinal, and with more controls.
I have run a few pilots and some month-to-year-long programs since 2004, some through Eastern Washington University, others through other facilities/clinics. Some increasingly using baseline assessment testing, mid-process assessment, exit assessment, and some months after participation assessment.
I'm not yet where I can publish the details of those, but working toward being able to share as much of that information as possible in coming years.
Several such programs are in the works right now, and several more on the horizon. Some of these past, present, and future programs include the following populations: ASD/PDD, AD/HD, at-risk youth, toddlers, youth, and adults, brain injury recovery, PTSD, the Deaf community, are just a few examples.
All with greatly useful information, and most very positive results, though some discovered caveats too.
