The Level 1 Researcher at RPG Research will learn to help with the design, implementation, and assessment of RPG Research's many research projects. The volunteer will help with taking observational notes during RPG sessions, help design, implement, and assess research projects, and otherwise work on various projects in accordance with RPG Research standards.

A mid-level position. The Level 1 Research Assistant Volunteer will learn to help with the design, implementation, and assessment of RPG Research's many research projects. Will write at least 1 research related blog posting per month, 2 research essays per year, and help with at least 1 major research study at RPG Research per year. Will help with taking observational notes during RPG sessions, help design, implement, and assess research projects, and otherwise work on various projects in accordance with RPG Research standards.

Location(s): Primarily iInternational remote, or optionally Spokane, Washington, USA.

Reports to: Research Staff and Primary Investigator PI.

RPG Research is a 100% volunteer international 501(c)3 non-profit research & human services organization studying the effects of music and role-playing games, and their potential to improve quality of life for a wide range of populations. http://www.rpgresearch.com

Due to the length of training and complexity of research projects, a bare minimum 1 year commitment is expected, with preference for multiple years to help bring research projects to completion.

General Purpose

Volunteer will engage in research on the latest information available about the effects and uses of role-playing games, their potential educational and therapeutic uses, and various original RPG Research projects. We have over 200 research questions in the queue needing to be addressed.


Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Take observation notes of research participants/players/game-masters, group interpersonal issues.
  • Data entry
  • Literature review research
  • Attend either in-person, or via remote access, at least one free training session / administrative meeting per week (3-4 hours)
  • Availability for at least 1 research project per month, and able to work at least 12 hours per moth (average 3 hours per week) on assigned research tasks.
  • Strongly self-motivated
  • Strong collaborative work ethic
  • Reliable schedule compliance
  • Prior research experience in any field

Education and Training

Required:

  • At least 1 year experience with a research study from any field.
  • Must pass background check before allowed to access non-public research data.
  • Assertive (not aggressive) presence with confident but warm, friendly, empathetic, and compassionate communication style.

Optional but helpful:

  • Training/experience in therapeutic recreation / recreation therapy field
  • Training/experience in psychology, health, social, or similar sciences.
  • Training/experience with data analysis.
  • Experience with various assessment tools.

* Role-playing Game (RPG) Formats include: tabletop (TRPG), live-action (LRPG & LARP), electronic (ERPG & CRPG), and hybrid (including SABM).

Hours:

Training: 2-3 hours per week free training (we offer multiple training sessions per week, require attending at least one per week).

Compensation: Volunteer (no financial compensation), free training. May be able to sign off on college credit upon agreement signed with your educational institution for volunteer hours or internship hours. Handled on a case-by-base basis.
